Fandom_Lawyers is a community of lawyers and non-lawyers who are interested in the broad spectrum of legal issues of concern to the fan community.

While some of our community members are also lawyers, nothing posted to this community, including anything in comments to posts, should be taken as legal advice.

If you're a fan, and you're dealing with legal issues, there are various resources that you should look into - many of them are free.

If you receive a Cease & Desist letter from anyone, for any purpose, you should forward that letter to Chilling Effects. Chilling Effects is a unique collaboration among law school clinics and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Conceived and developed at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society by Berkman Fellow Wendy Seltzer, the project is now supported by clinical programs at Harvard, Berkeley, Stanford, University of San Francisco, and University of Maine law schools and the EFF. Chilling Effects aims to support lawful online activity against the chill of unwarranted legal threats, and you can learn more about the site, and the clinics that participate in their projects, here.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has spent the past decade working to protect "the rights of web surfers everywhere". They have been involved in a wide range of cases where corporations have attempted to overstate their claims to things like copyright and trademark rights.

rivkat has created a bibliography of legal articles on fannish subjects; you can find it here.
